Solver / Data Analysis don't function

Hi

I am running into a problem trying to use the Solver function. There are a few issues that seem to appear
1. When I select both Analysis Toolpak and Analysis Toolpak-VBA in the Tools->Add-ins box, Excel tries to compile, but returns two error boxes: first, a "Compile Error" notice, then a notice stating "Compile error in hidden module: VBA functions and Subs", and then it crashes. If I do not check the VBA version, this does not happen

The next problem, though, is the real issue, which is that I cannot get Solver to work even after selecting the Analysis Toolpak add-in. The problem seems to have started when I tried to run the Solver from a second user's (my wife's) account. Here's the process

1. I uninstalled & re-installed Office X and the ValuPak
2. I installed Office updates 10.1.2 through 10.1.5
3. I was able to successfully run Solver from my user account
4. I logged into my wife's account and launched Excel
5. When I select Tools->Solver, I get a strange dialog box that has only two picture characters in it (unfortunately, I can't copy & paste them)
6. Worse, when I return to my own account, I now get the same dialog box--Solver no longer seems to work

This is really frustrating, and I need to have Solver access. Any suggestions

My setup is
G4 Quicksilver, 1.15GB RAM, OS X 10.3.
I do have Office (and the entire applications folder) on a separate partition from the boot drive

Thanks
Jeff

An update to this

After more testing, it appears that the issue isn't caused by trying to use this from different user accounts. If I do the following, I still experience the same strange dialog box

1. Trash ~/Library/Preferences/Microsof
2. Launch Excel and try Solver. It works fine
3. Quit Excel
4. Launch Excel again and try Solver. It does not work--the same strange dialog box described below appears

I can repeat this process

I can't reproduce the problem here - does this happen with any workbook
that you use Solver on, or just one? If just one, can you send me the
workbook you're using?

Solver and the Analysis Toolpak Add-in are separate add-ins, so I
wouldn't suspect the ATP.

The Solver Add-in is in the Microsoft Office X:Office:Add-ins: folder.
What version is it? After applying all the updaters (10.1.2, 10.1.4 and
10.1.5), mine is "10.1.0 (1926)". The Solver Library (in the same
folder) is version "10.0.0 (1214)".
