Some docs slow to open in XP or 2003

Some documents (5, sent to me from a word 9 user as a
zipped archive) take in the order of 5-10 minutes to open
in word 10 and greater (not yet opened) in word 11 (B2).
When opened in Word 9, they open immediatly.
When saved from word 9 or 10, the same issues are present
from word 10 and 11. The issues is observed in multiple
desktops and is similar from local or network storage.
Other documents from the same user do not seem to have
any issues.

Does Word look for the template even if "Automatically update document
styles" is not enabled? I have many old docs based on long-gone templates
that Word 2002 has no problem with.
