Some downloaded clipart won't resize in Word

Some clips I've downloaded from Microsoft are thumbnail size when inserted
into a Word document - if enlarged they degrade rapidly. When opening the
same downloaded image in, eg, Paint Shop Pro, it comes out full size! Weird.
Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong??

If the pictures have a .gif extension, they will degrade when you enlarge them.
Most of the .gif images on the Office site are small, mainly to be used as web
elements.

Without knowing anything about what version of Word/Windows or what type of
image file format we're dealing with, this is not more than a guess.

You're probably dealing with either a .bmp, .gif or some other low-res
image format which can suffer dramatically when you stretch them. In order to
increase the display size the 'blocks of color' get bigger. When you open
those files in a graphics app you are probably seeing them at a higher degree
of magnification *not* a bigger size. It is also quite possible that the
graphics program is simply better equipped to deal with images than is a
Word processing program.

FWIW - any images should be appropriately prepared in terms of print size,
resolution & file format *before* being stuck into a doc.
