some images don't show when viewing site w/Mozilla, Firefox, Netsc

Some of my images don't show up when viewing the site with browsers other
than IE. I checked the images and they're just jpg's, nothing special that I
could see. I made sure there were no overlaps on them, but that didn't help.
Any ideas? Besides changing to another web editor?

Sorry, but this is a common complaint about Publisher 2003 webpages. They
work primarily with IE. Microsoft has apparently decided that Firefox,
Netscape and even those with Apple computers don't want to see sites built
with Publisher...or perhaps they don't want you to use the other
browsers...hummm. Excuse my cynicism. You can disable Ping and VML, and that
might help a bit, but you may need to either go back to Publisher 2000, or
switch to something else.

That's what I was afraid you'd say. :( It's too bad that Microsoft doesn't
get the concept that if someone is going to create a web site, he/she would
want everyone to view it--regardless of browser. I really liked Publisher
2003, too. Bummer. Another thought: Maybe they should make their browser
better and less prone to attacks so that the others wouldn't be a significant
competition. ...Now I'm just venting.

I already had png and vml turned off. I just find it strange that some
pictures appear and others don't. Wish I could figure out what the difference
is. Would it help to edit the page with FrontPage and re-insert the pictures?

Thanks for your help,
Judi

I appreciate your frustration, and hope Microsoft takes a different
direction by the time they bring out the next version, because I really
would like to upgrade from 2000, but I am not holding my breath. The need to
use IE is just one of the problems with using Pub 2003 for webpages. I know
that David Bartosik, the resident expert and MVP is campaigning hard for
changes. As per FrontPage, if you have it, I guess it might be smart just
to switch now. It is far better for web building, and you can use Publisher
for your print documents.

Judi, I had another thought. One of the things that Microsoft Office 2003
Service Pack 1 does is allow you to compress images to reduce the size of
the HTML file produced by Publisher 2003. If you have time, perhaps download
and install that service pack, install it, compress the images in your site,
and see if that makes any difference. Given that some of your images load in
Firefox and other browsers, I wonder if the ones that don't are perhaps
larger images that could be optimized for the web, and then perhaps would
work. If you do try this, please report back. As I said, the issues you are
having are common, and there are a lot of people that would like solutions.
I don't have Pub 2003, or I would try it. Here is the link about compressing
the images:

I'm sorry, I don't know for sure. David Bartosik...are you out there? Help!

If David or someone else doesn't answer, I am sure you could post the

FrontPage is a *lot* more alternate browser friendly - provided you don't
use something funky that only IE likes.

Are you using the most current version of FrontPage for your site? Have you
tested it to see if it loads with Apple computers, Firefox, Netscape, etc.?
Would you be interested in posting the URL so the OP can test it? Thanks.

Thanks JoAnn. FWIW, the site looks pretty much the same in IE and in
Foxfire, but not exactly the same. On your home page the borders around the
officers is rendered differently, and is in one case at least, not rendered
at all. Plus the Best Sites/Add free stats box at the bottom of the home
page is centered in IE, but left justified in Firefox. In general it would
seem that FrontPage produces code that will work in FireFox, with some
variation.

Judi, JoAnn provided a link to her site produced with FrontPage 2003 at
www.embroidery-marega.org
I found that it mostly loaded ok in Firefox (see my response to her), but
have no idea if it will load ok in other browsers, or on Apple machines.
Perhaps test the other browsers that you are using by loading her site to
see if that answers your question about using FrontPage.
