Some messages get stuck in outbox when contact has recipient name included in “display as”

For some reason over the last couple of months when I tried to send e-
mails to certain contacts the message gets stuck in the outbox until I
delete the person's real name from “display as” in that contact’s
information. In other words, some messages with contact information
containing a “display as” entry of the form:

John Smith ([email protected])

refuse to leave the outbox until “display as” is changed to:

(e-mail address removed) .

This behavior does not occur with all contacts, only some, although it
is becoming more and more vexing with time. I can find no setting in
Outlook 2007 that seems to relate to this problem. Does anyone know
what is going on here and how to fix it?

Thanks in advance!

does the display name resolve to a valid email address? The format used by
"John Smith ([email protected])" is valid only for display.

No--I don't think so. The "To" line in the outgoing message shows:
John Smith ([email protected])

is it underlined? Have you checked the recipients contact and fixed the
address or display name on the contact?

Yes they are underlined but still don't work. To get them to work I
have to change the "display as" entry in contact information so ONLY
the email address is displayed. I never had any problems with mailing
to these people until a couple of months ago!

Double-click the email address of the contact. What do you see?

If I double-click the email address in the contact-information
display, nothing happens. If I double-click the email address from
the "To" line of a messages, the contact-information display opens.

if clicking on the address in the contact does nothing, then there is no
address associated with it - you should see an email properties dialog.

Hmm--so does this leave me with some awful repair solutions such as
exporting and reimporting the contacts file??? Is there any other
solution?

Try reentering the e-mail address in the Contact record, then saving the
record again. WHat happens after that?
