Some of the Summary bars in the file contain different dates!!

I was going thru my project and noticed that some of the summary bars are
carrying different dates then the activities within it. I was unsure of
where they might be pulling the info from.
For ex.
Start Finish
Summary 1 10/25/04 5/25/05
Activity 1 12/16/04 4/20/05
Activity 2 1/20/05 5/25/05

Now if they were the only 2 activities below this summary, where would that
summary bar be pulling that 10/25/04 start date from if the other's start
dates where out further.

Hi

i last saw this behaviour in a project file that was basically corrupt.
What had happened was that there were lots of changes to the file and tasks
links had been created between a summary task and a sub-task further down
the project file (at this point in time the sub-task was part of another
summary), the sub-task then got moved to be a sub-task of the summary task
it was linked to (which project doesn't like) and a circular reference was
created which also caused the dates to go like the ones you showed below.

the file was "fixed" by the method outlined at
http://www.mvps.org/project/faqs.htm

The noted behavior will also occur is Options/Calculation is set to
Manual.

I did have calculation set on manual but the dates on the summary activity
stayed in place even after the file had been calculated.

You might check to see that the file is sorted correctly. Do this from
project menu and sort by ID.
