Some Outlook 2003 emails are deleted 4 times as received - why?

Automatic delete with 4 copies in the delete file often occurs with replies
to emails I have sent and with some original emails from senders on my safe
senders and safe recipients lists, including safe senders' domains. I've
double checked and triple checked these lists and can't find any reason. Any
suggetions

Can you start your story from the beginning?
Sounds like you have multiple rules configured to delete messages when they
arrive.

Automatically deleted by WHAT? Rules maybe? Some anti-spam software?
with 4 copies in the delete file

A delete "file"? Might you actually mean the Deleted Items folder? How
many rules do you have defined that "move a copy" rather than "move" or
"delete"?

An e-mail is received once. For there to be 4 copies of it:
- You received 4 copies of the same e-mail from your mail server.
- You moved 4 copies of the same received e-mail using rules.
- Your anti-spam program screwed up and made 4 copies of the e-mail.
- Your anti-virus program caused timeouts which resulted in your e-mail
client retrying 4 times to get the same e-mail from the mail server.
often occurs with replies
to emails I have sent

So you are getting replies to your e-mails. And they end up in the
Deleted Items folder. That means you have a rule that moves them out of
the Inbox folder and into the Deleted Items folder, or maybe some
anti-spam program is doing that.
and with some original emails from senders on my safe
senders and safe recipients lists, including safe senders' domains.

Which are overriden by your rules or anti-spam program.
I've double checked and triple checked these lists and can't find any reason.

Try disabling e-mail scanning in your anti-virus software. It is
redundant protection, anyway.
