some strange profile corruption

Dear group,

I've run into something quite strange, that I would share with you and ask
you whether you know any solution to it without having to use the
installation CD of to reinstall Outlook. The problem I will describe has
occured OL2000. It's driving me nuts.

Description:
User (OL2000, CW) calls and says that he is not able to compose mails. My
first idea was of course that this will be again some connectivity issue
again. However after I've looked at his screen, the error message referred
to the error that there is no delivery location set and I would have to set
a valid delivery location in Tools > Services > Delivery. Fine, I've checked
and it was set to the Exchange folder.
Afterwards my first idea was of course that I should create a new profile.
That didn't help. What wondered me the most was actually, that at this point
I've set Outlook to start with this profile automatically, but when I've
checked the services from inside Outlook, it showed up all the services that
were associated with his old profile. Then again I changed back to the
initial profile and the error remained the same. Then I had a bit "silly"
idea, which seemed (it actually didn't) to work :

I've set the delivery location to a local PST. The mails came in and the
error message went away. I thought everything was solved fine. But that was
not the case.
The user called after about 30 mins again saying that now he has lost access
to his Global Address List (although I've taken first a backup of his
initial profile, which contained all necessary services). After taking
control of his computer again, I've also noticed that the Exchange folder
could not be opened because "The set of folders could not be opened".

I must admit that at this point I've decided to give it up (after
troubleshooting for more than 30 mins over a remote control software). Is
there something I could have done before saying that this Outlook should be
reinstalled. Any ideas?

Thank you very much for reading this story.

The issue could also be with connectivity. I have seen this error when a
person using wireless to connect to work via VPN. It shows connected but
there would be some latency causing odd problems such as this. I have also
seen the same issue occur on DSL connections.

Other things I have ran into with this similar message which is sort of
broad but may help you some what.

Outlook had not been set as the default mail delivery gave a similar message
so I would check that as well as one system had virus issues (which is most
likely not the case here) and system that was just not updated with all the
patches.

I would also test a different new profile. Add your profile to the system
if you can and see if you have the same issue. If you do then it is
something other then that such as program or connectivity. Hope this helps
somewhat.

Regards,
