Someone sending mail from my outlook

V

Vic Spainhower

Hello,

I am using Outlook version 2007 and something has control of it and is
sending spam messages out 10 at a time. When I send a message I sometimes
will see that it is sending 10 messages but the other 9 don't show up in the
Sent folder. I frequently get undeliverable messages from this id:

<[email protected]>... User unknown)

How can I track this down and eliminate it - Virus scans and Spy scans don't
eliminate it.

It definitely sounds like a virus - MacAfee will stop the repeating emails.
Try Spybot to hunt it down.

Sounds like you have a few read receipts going out. Is that option disabled? If not, I would do so immediately.

Laura,

I did have McAfee for years but I've now switched to E-Trust. This happens
in both environments. I've also run SpyBot and CounterSpy but neither
detects it.

Milly,

This is not a Read Receipt - that option is disabled. As I said I they are
"Undeliverable Messages" from various e-mail servers.

Someone has your email address on their computer and it is THEIR computer
that has a virus. Don't worry about it, just delete them.

Gordon,

I don't think so because periodically when I send a single message - I see
"Sending 9,10 ... 10,10" but the 9 extra messages don't show up in the
Sent Folder.

How many messaging services do you have configured in Outlook?

Brian,

I can do that but I don't understand how this will help or what it will tell
me. All of the messages are spam and from the same person.

I have 10 different email accounts - only 1 is affected

So, you aren't the only person who has mentioned that the Send/Recieve count
was wrong, and it always seems to be off by somewhere around the number of
accounts, usually minus one.

However, no one has ever verified that Outlook was not actually sending that
number of messages (to my knowledge) using a network sniff to see what is
actually happening on the conversation.

That said, I do not believe in any way whatsoever that that is related to
the messages you are getting. Considering you've already been told that and
you don't believe it, I don't believe I can really say anything to make you
believe it, but I've dealt with email and viruses for some 10+ years now
and, most likely, what you're seeing is this. Viruses have evolved to the
point where on the machine they infect, they will look at the address book
on *that* machine and use it for who to send messages from. It is common.
