something unusual -- can't save as before

I'm on a small LAN (e.g., three PC's -- say Alpha, Bravo, & Charlie) and
something unusual has started to happen which has never happened before ---

I'm trying to save a MS Word document called "Jamie" from PC Charlie to PC
Bravo, specifically to a mapped drive (that is the C drive of PC Bravo, but
which shows up as Drive K on PC Charlie).

I am trying to save to a folder which is K:\Data\Word\General\

However, I get a MS Word pop-up window that says:
The folder 'K:\Data\Word\General\Jamie' isn't accessible. The folder may be
located on an unavailable volume or protected with a password.

The C drive of PC Bravo is a shared drive, and has been that way for a long
time. So why is there a suddenly a difficulty saving to it?! This problem
is intermittent, but is happening frequently!!!???

BTW, both PC's use MS Word 97. PC Bravo = Win 98, and PC Charlie = Win XP.

G'Day Jack,

While you have encountered this problem in Word, it is
not a Word issue - it is a Windows Xp issue.

I have had it happen occasionally on a LAN with Win98SE.

The only way I have found to fix it, is to abort the Save
(leaving Word open) and switch to Windows Explorer.

Explorer seems to have the ability to 'force' a re-connect.
Attempting to Explore the destination disk will usually be
successful and, in the process, 'fix' the connection.

Then return to Word and complete the Save.

I have also found that the problem will go away for a
time if I re-run the Network Connection Wizard on the
Win Xp machine.

If you installed Windows XP update KB885250 "MS05-011: Vulnerability in
server message block could allow remote code execution", try
uninstalling KB885250 in Start | Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs.

Pat,

I couldn't make it happen with Win Explore; but, it will save if I let it
use the default file name that Word suggests!! If I try to use the name I
want, no cigar.

And yes, PC Bravo = Win 98SE.

Weird!!!

I see that I did install that update just recently -- I wonder what I miss
if I uninstall -- maybe the MS website will tell me.

OK, thanks ---

Regarding the threat pertaining to the update, MS says, "Maximum Severity
Rating: Critical"

So, I guess I'll keep it installed and hope that MS comes up with a fix for
the SAVE problem. However, I couldn't find anything on their website re the
SAVE problem. How did you figure it was the security update that caused the
problem?

Jack

See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=885250 for more information about
the update.

Well, well -- an interesting discovery --

The problem exists with all my MS Office 97 programs - Word, Excel, Power
Point, but not with graphics programs like PhotoImpact, or with Notepad or
Wordpad.
