Sort and filter by column in sharepoint designer 2007

I am trying to allow the user to sort by columns in a data view, I click on
the data view properties to enable this for the form I am working on, but the
Toolbar option to permit Enable sorting and filterin on column headers (basic
table layout) does not appear as an option to be selected. If you look at
the help section this looks like it should be part of the General tab and
there are no disclaimers that it only runs under certain conditions.

I installed Sharepoint designer 2007 using the upgrade software using the
defaults.

Any suggestions as to where to find the tool and add it into the data view
properties?
