Date cells will sort ascending or descending no matter which cell format
they have. If not then you may have a date-looking text instead of a date.
If you want a "group by year" or "sum by year" thing instead, a Pivot table
does that. (But make lots of coffee first if this is your first Pivot table
;-)
Set up a custom date format (Format, Cells, Category, Custom, Type ) and
enter yyyy-mmm-dd
