sort error message in excel

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

I'm trying to sort my data as I have done a million other times but now this error messages comes up:
"This operation requires the merged cells to be identically sized."
I'm not sure what its problem is and how to rectify it.
I use this data to merge into labels but the raw data within the spreadsheet is just data - no formulas, etc..

The error is telling you that you have merged cells mixed in with your
unmerged cells.

Unmerge all cells (or only select unmerged cells before sorting).

This is only one reason that merged cells should never be used...
