Sort function in Microsoft Office for MAC, Excel

Help!
In a routine Excel spreadsheet, I suddenly cannot sort data. A pop-up
says "This operation requires the merged cells to be identically
sized".
I am not merging anything. As I have done countless times in the
past, I am merely sorting several rows by the date in Column A. Does
anyone know what's going wrong?

What the message is telling you isn't that you're trying to merge anything,
but rather that the data range you're trying to sort contains cells that
have already been merged.
