sort groups of text

I have a Word file with about 100 articles pasted at the end. The
article titles are all Heading 2 style and follow the convention:

"[yyyy-mm-dd] [Article Title]"

for example,

2006-07-17 Local Farmer Claims Cow Jumped Over the Moon

I'd like to sort the articles by descending date. I'd also like to
keep the formatting & pictures in the article bodies. I can sort the
titles, my main problem is grouping the articles. What is the best way
to group the titles/articles? Should I store the location of each
Heading 2 and do it that way, and if so how do I find those locations?
Or is there a better way? Thanks for any suggestions.

IF I understand you correctly, try going to the OUTLINE view and display
up through and including Level 2 (Heading 2). This will collapse the
article content. Now SELECT all the Heading 2 titles you want to sort and
go to Table/Sort. When you sort in the Outline view with collapsed text
the collapsed text should sort with the titles.
