Sort on only portion of a column

Is it possible to only sort on a portion of a column rather than a whole
column? For example: cell A3 through A50 are values from calculated
formulas - cell A1 and A2 are column headings and cell A51 is a column total.
I only want to sort cells A3 - A50. I have tried several different ways,
but it always includes cell A51 in the sort. Please advise.

Did you select your range (A3:x50) first, then sort?

Yes.

Highlight the section that you wish to sort.
In your example:

Highlight A3:A50 and Data --> Sort
Sort by "Column A", Ascending/Descending.
