Sort Open menu

Recently in Word 2003 when I click on the 'open folder' icon to access files
then menu that is subsequently displayed is sorted in descending order (i.e.
Z to A). How can I change it back to ascending order?

Right-click a blank spot in the dialog. In the popup menu, click
Arrange Icons By, and in the submenu click Name. Each time you do
this, the sort order will toggle from descending to ascending or vice
versa.

Alternatively, if you have the Details view (right-click > View >
Details), you can just click the header of the Name column to reverse
the order.

In my experience, using the shortcut menu always arranges the items in
ascending order (by Name, Date, etc.); to reverse the sort order, it is
necessary to click the column heading in Details view.

Ah, I found the difference: Repeatedly selecting Name (or Modified,
etc.) in the shortcut menu toggles the sort order if the View is set
to List or Details. It always produces ascending order in the other
views.

It must have made sense to the developers, but it seems odd that
they'd bother to make the distinction.

Thank you Jay and Suzanne - the problem has now been sorted. Mike871,

That's especially annoying since when you're in Details view you *can* click
on the headings; when you really *need* the shortcut menu to swap sort order
is when you're not. <sigh>
