sort selection in Exel XP

Does anyone know what determines which cells will be
selected in a worksheet if a range is not previously
selected before going to Data, Sort? I have an
inconsistant selection when I'm in various cells in the
worksheet. Sometimes the worksheet will only highlight 4
cells to do the sort. Then other times the entire
worksheet will be highlighted when I go to Data, Sort.
