Sort Table - Multiple Words

I have read the instructions in Word 2000's Help files re:
sorting multiple words in a table. (e.g. John Smith) The
instructions say to click Sort, Table, Options, Other,
Separate fields at, type a space,... Sort by Word 2.

The options menu has "Separate fields at" greyed out so no
choice can be made. Is there a setting I missed to
activate this feature?

These options apply only to sorting text that is not in a table.
