Sorting a sub form causes new record row to disappear

I have a strange problem - when I sort a subform (which is a datasheet style), the new record row at the bottom disappears - and also I can't update existing records. The only way to bring it back is to right click the subform and chose Remove Filter. That then brings back the new record row and enables me to edit existing data

My subform is based on a query, but I can't work out how this should interfere. I have another sub form on another page - that is not based on a query and that works fine

Does anyone have any ideas
