Sorting address book

B

Bob Griendling

Trying to solve the problem of "services" not showing up under the Tools
option, I changed from Corporate Workgroup to Internet only setting.
Account services did then show up, but there were other features of this
setting that I didn't like. So I changed back to Corporate Workgroup .

And again, under Corporate Workgroup the "services" options under "Tools"
doesn't work.

But now my address book sorts the names by first name. When I try to go to
Address Book/Tools I get a message that I don't have enough memory
resources. I've rebooted twice and the Task Manager shows I have 1.6 GB of
memory available.

When I posted about this problem some time ago, that message thread said I
should set up a new profile. I did, but with
that one too, the "services" doesn't work. And once I set up a new profile,
I'm not sure how that fixes my problem and how I get all my contacts to show
up in my address book by last name instead of first name.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm using Outlook 2000 SP-3
(9.0.0.6627).

Switching back and forth between mail support modes is not supported and
usually corrupts a profile beyond repair. State how you are trying to create
a new profile and why you can't.

First, I have discovered how to get my address book to show last names by
choosing Outlook Address Book and "Properties."
But I still can't get to Tools/services. Here are the two ways I tried to
create a new profile:

Went to Control Panel/Mail/Show profiles/Add. I then gave the new profile a
name and was prompted for the MS Office disk 1. I put it in and it then it
asked me to check either Microsoft Exchange Server or Internet Mail.

1. I tried choosing MS Exchange server and it then prompted me for its name,
which, since I am no longer connected to that server as I was years ago, I
wasn't able to name it. I tried "Test" but, not surprisingly, it then told
me that "the server containing Global Address List is no longer available."

2. The I tried choosing Internet Mail and set up my email account. I then
opened Outlook went to Tools/Options/Mail services and chose "reconfigure
mail support" and chose Corporate Workgroup.

Still, when I click Tools/Services, nothing happens.

To be clear on what I'm trying to accomplish:
1. Sort Address Book by last name. Done
2. Get to Services from the Tools menu, instead of going to control
panel/mail
3. Get to Address Book/Tools/ Options and not get a "You need more memory"
message.

Lots of mistakes here.
If you were able to select Exchange Server as a transport, then by
delimitation you were already running Corp/Workgroup mode. IMO offers no
such option to add Exchange Server. When you selected Internet Mail as the
transport, you were in no way changing modes, just selecting a different
transport type. But you were still running Corp/Workgroup. But now you were
using a profile that you had already corrupted by trying to add a
non-existent Exchange Server. And when you again tried to change mail
support you were in fact trying to "change" to the same mode you were
already running, and you toasted this profile beyond repair.
You can try a new profile from scratch, but you must take care to create it
correctly. Be aware that rest of the world abandoned this version long ago.
It has been out of support for years and this "two mode" scenario made it
too buggy to be of much use.

Other than not doing want you outlined I did wrong, I'm not sure how I

Yes. Outlook 2000 is beyond redemption. I have listed the reasons why your
installation might be as well. I have no other suggestions beyond the ones
we have posted in this group and that appear in the KB:
It is not unusual for the Outlook Address Book to "lose track" of the
connection to its Contacts Folder when you move or import your PST or update
your Outlook version or operating system. Use the following steps to reset
the connection. Note that in some instances you may actually have to remove
the Outlook Address Book completely from your Profile, close Outlook, and
then re-add it before you can get it to work.

Go to Tools > Services. Make sure the Outlook Address Book service is
listed. If not, add it. Next, R click on the Contact folder or folders you
want the OAB to display, choose "Properties", go to the Outlook Address Book
tab and check the "Show this folder as an E-mail address book" box. You may
also need to go to Tools > Options > Addressing Tab and choose to show your
Contacts folder.

If you'll recall, one of my problem is that I can't get to Tools>Services.
When I click that nothing opens/happens.

My address book does connect to my Contacts folder, as I have that box
checked that you reference. But beyond the Tools>Services not appearing, I
also can't set the Send/Receive button to automatically check all my
accounts. I used to have that capability, but in this process, I've lost
it.

The article you reference is really for the Contacts/address book connection
problem, which is not mine, at least at this time.

I tried the Repair function but it didn't help. I may try to reinstall
Outlook, unless you counsel otherwise. Thanks for your help.

Lots of mistakes here.
If you were able to select Exchange Server as a transport, then by
delimitation you were already running Corp/Workgroup mode. IMO offers
no such option to add Exchange Server. When you selected Internet Mail
as the transport, you were in no way changing modes, just selecting a
different transport type. But you were still running Corp/Workgroup.
But now you were using a profile that you had already corrupted by
trying to add a non-existent Exchange Server. And when you again tried
to change mail support you were in fact trying to "change" to the same
mode you were already running, and you toasted this profile beyond
repair.
You can try a new profile from scratch, but you must take care to
create it correctly. Be aware that rest of the world abandoned this
version long ago. It has been out of support for years and this "two
mode" scenario made it too buggy to be of much use.

First, I have discovered how to get my address book to show last names
by choosing Outlook Address Book and "Properties."
But I still can't get to Tools/services. Here are the two ways I
tried to create a new profile:

Went to Control Panel/Mail/Show profiles/Add. I then gave the new
profile a name and was prompted for the MS Office disk 1. I put it in
and it then it asked me to check either Microsoft Exchange Server or
Internet Mail.

1. I tried choosing MS Exchange server and it then prompted me for its
name, which, since I am no longer connected to that server as I was
years ago, I wasn't able to name it. I tried "Test" but, not
surprisingly, it then told me that "the server containing Global
Address List is no longer available."

2. The I tried choosing Internet Mail and set up my email account. I
then opened Outlook went to Tools/Options/Mail services and chose
"reconfigure mail support" and chose Corporate Workgroup.

Still, when I click Tools/Services, nothing happens.

To be clear on what I'm trying to accomplish:
1. Sort Address Book by last name. Done
2. Get to Services from the Tools menu, instead of going to control
panel/mail
3. Get to Address Book/Tools/ Options and not get a "You need more
memory" message.

You can always try deleting your profile in the registry and trying again.
But it's hard to know which support mode your setup is using. Once you go
back and forth between modes, all beta are off.
To create a new "profile" in IMO, quit Outlook then delete this key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Messaging
Subsystem\Profiles\Microsoft Outlook Internet Settings

Restart Outlook. It will create a new profile automatically.

Lots of confusion here.

Other than not doing want you outlined I did wrong, I'm not sure how
I
create a new profile "carefully." Nonetheless, I tried again.

I deleted the other profiles I had made (except the one I'm currently
using). I entered Control Panel/Mail/Show profiles/Add. I named it,
chose Internet E-Mail. I set up my mail account (which seems to be
working fine). I don't recall it asking me anything else. I hit
"finish." Still, when I go to Address Book/Tools/Options I get the
same
message: Address Book Options could not be displayed. You need more
memory or system resources...." When I go to Tools/Services, nothing
happens.

I've tried to search the MS Knowledge Base for this error but haven't
come up with anything. If you know of an article I should read,
please
let me know.

I'm also unclear what the statement "[the] rest of the world
abandoned
this version long ago. It has been out of support for years and this
"two
mode" scenario made it too buggy to be of much use" means. Version of
what? Outlook 2000?

Note that good old spell checker change "by definition" to "by
delimitation." I have no idea why.

Lots of mistakes here.
If you were able to select Exchange Server as a transport, then by
delimitation you were already running Corp/Workgroup mode. IMO
offers
no such option to add Exchange Server. When you selected Internet
Mail
as the transport, you were in no way changing modes, just selecting
a
different transport type. But you were still running
Corp/Workgroup.
But now you were using a profile that you had already corrupted by
trying to add a non-existent Exchange Server. And when you again
tried
to change mail support you were in fact trying to "change" to the
same
mode you were already running, and you toasted this profile beyond
repair.
You can try a new profile from scratch, but you must take care to
create it correctly. Be aware that rest of the world abandoned this
version long ago. It has been out of support for years and this
"two
mode" scenario made it too buggy to be of much use.

First, I have discovered how to get my address book to show last
names
by choosing Outlook Address Book and "Properties."
But I still can't get to Tools/services. Here are the two ways I
tried to create a new profile:

Went to Control Panel/Mail/Show profiles/Add. I then gave the new
profile a name and was prompted for the MS Office disk 1. I put
it in
and it then it asked me to check either Microsoft Exchange Server
or
Internet Mail.

1. I tried choosing MS Exchange server and it then prompted me for
its
name, which, since I am no longer connected to that server as I
was
years ago, I wasn't able to name it.

Done
2. Get to Services from the Tools menu, instead of going to
control
panel/mail
3. Get to Address Book/Tools/ Options and not get a "You need more
memory" message.

Trying to solve the problem of "services" not showing up under
the
Tools
option, I changed from Corporate Workgroup to Internet only
setting.
Account services did then show up, but there were other
features
of
this
setting that I didn't like. So I changed back to Corporate
Workgroup .

And again, under Corporate Workgroup the "services" options
under
"Tools"
doesn't work.

But now my address book sorts the names by first name. When I
try
to
go to
Address Book/Tools I get a message that I don't have enough
memory
resources. I've rebooted twice and the Task Manager shows I
have
1.6
GB of
memory available.

When I posted about this problem some time ago, that message
thread
said I
should set up a new profile. I did, but with
that one too, the "services" doesn't work. And once I set up
a
new
profile,
I'm not sure how that fixes my problem and how I get all my
contacts to
show
up in my address book by last name instead of first name.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm using Outlook 2000
SP-3
(9.0.0.6627).

No. It won't touch your data. I'm just not sure your profile is still using
this key.

You can always try deleting your profile in the registry and trying
again. But it's hard to know which support mode your setup is using. Once
you go back and forth between modes, all beta are off.
To create a new "profile" in IMO, quit Outlook then delete this key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Messaging
Subsystem\Profiles\Microsoft Outlook Internet Settings

Restart Outlook. It will create a new profile automatically.

OK. I assume the procedure I followed as described in the message of

other solution. Thanks.

Reinstalling Outlook won't help. It never does. As I said, it is your
profile that is corrupted. Recreating your profile correctly is your
best shot.

If you'll recall, one of my problem is that I can't get to
Tools>Services. When I click that nothing opens/happens.

My address book does connect to my Contacts folder, as I have that box
checked that you reference. But beyond the Tools>Services not
appearing, I also can't set the Send/Receive button to automatically
check all my accounts. I used to have that capability, but in this
process, I've lost it.

The article you reference is really for the Contacts/address book
connection problem, which is not mine, at least at this time.

I tried the Repair function but it didn't help. I may try to
reinstall Outlook, unless you counsel otherwise. Thanks for your
help.

Bob

Yes. Outlook 2000 is beyond redemption. I have listed the reasons why
your
installation might be as well. I have no other suggestions beyond the
ones
we have posted in this group and that appear in the KB:
It is not unusual for the Outlook Address Book to "lose track" of the
connection to its Contacts Folder when you move or import your PST or
update your Outlook version or operating system. Use the following
steps
to reset the connection. Note that in some instances you may actually
have
to remove the Outlook Address Book completely from your Profile,
close
Outlook, and then re-add it before you can get it to work.

Go to Tools > Services. Make sure the Outlook Address Book service is
listed. If not, add it. Next, R click on the Contact folder or
folders you
want the OAB to display, choose "Properties", go to the Outlook
Address
Book tab and check the "Show this folder as an E-mail address book"
box.
You may also need to go to Tools > Options > Addressing Tab and
choose to
show your Contacts folder.
