Sorting columns-merged cells

Excel 2002...
If I have a sheet with merged cells here and there, is
there anyway to sort the columns without un-merging?

Are all cells to be sorted the identical size? If yes, just
Data>Sort>Choose column(s) to sort by or click the A-Z or Z-A icon. If they
are not the same size, you must have seen the error message that pops up.
There is no workaround, AFAIK.

Just for the record, most of the regulars in here avoid merged cells like the
plague - They can cause far more headaches than they ever solve.
