Sorting dates

How do I troubleshoot sorting dates in Word? I've already checked to make
sure I have forward slashes, but that didn't help.

Version of Word?

Which country (USA, England, other) date format would you use?

Which country date format is set up in the Windows Control Panel?

Are you trying to sort dates in text, in a table, something else?

Finally, could you give us a few examples of the dates you're trying to sort,
for testing purposes?

I believe that this is Microsoft Word from the Office 2003 Software Pack.

I tried using two different date formats that I've seen the the USA:
MM/DD/YY and MM-DD-YY.

The date format set up under Regional and Language Options in the Control
Panel is M/D/YYYY.

I am trying to sort dates in a table.

Examples of dates I'm trying to sort: 05/13/05, 06/07/05, etc.

If the date format is set up in the Control Panel as shown above, does that
mean that dates need to be listed in the same manner in Word in order to be
sorted correctly in tables?

Thank you for your time, I appreciate it.

I don't think so. If you set the sort type as Date (and often Word will
figure this out on your own), it should sort dates intelligently. Have you
tried it?

Yes, I have tried sorting according to date, but it sorts the entries
according to no identifiable order, or it doesn't sort them at all.

Thanks for your thoughts, I welcome any other questions or suggestions about
this.

On my machine (Word 2003 on Windows XP) with the Control Panel short date
format set to M/d/yyyy, the following dates

05/13/2005
04/15/2005
07/02/2005
04/12/2005

get sorted correctly to

04/12/2005
04/15/2005
05/13/2005
07/02/2005

and spaces before or after a date do not prevent the sort from being
performed.
