Outlook Express has a much more elegant solution than Outlook 2003 for
sorting email by conversation.
In Outlook Express, selecting "View -> Current View -> Group by Converstion"
will create a simple drop down box to the left of any thread with more than
one message. All other messages appear as before. You can still sort by any
other field without affecting this grouping.
In versions of Outlook prior to and including 2003, one can group by
conversation, but ALL threads, including ones with only a single email are
grouped. Thus, to get at these messages, you still have to open the group
simply to see the single email. In addition, the use of display space is
sub-optimal (i.e., cluttered) as now single messages require two lines when
opened. Finally, if you now sort by date or sender, you can't easily get
back to the conversation view. You have to add the "Conversation" Field,
then (if you don't want the word "Conversation" pre-pended to each message
group) you have to "Format Columns", then you have to "Group by."
In Outlook 2003, there is a new "View -> Arrange by -> Conversation" option.
This is even worse. Now you can't collapse any of the messages down to a
single line! All threads take up two lines regardless of whether they are
single emails or groups that have been collapsed.
It is disappointing that a flagship product like Outlook doesn't offer the
same level of elegance as Outlook Express.
