Sorting Issue

I have searched for an answer to this problem, but have yet to get an
answer to explain it.

Every now and then, when sorting a column, everything will get sorted
with the exception of the first item in the sort list, i.e.

Pocatello, ID
Convergys
Monterrey, MX
Nederland, TX
Salt Lake City, UT
San Juan
Tulsa, OK

In this example, everything from Pocatello to Tulsa was highlighted,
but Pocatello does not join the "sort". This seems to be random
(although I know there has to be a reason), and every now and then will
sort with the rest of the cities.

Anyone know why this is? Or how to change it?

Thanks,
Mike

If you're using Data|Sort, make sure you check the box:
"my list has: No header row"

If you're clicking on the A/Z or Z/A icons on the toolbar, be very careful. Not
all versions of excel will tell you have adjacent columns that you may want to
include in your sort range.

Excel guesses at the header. Sometimes it guesses wrong. (I never trust it and
always click the appropriate option.)

But if you add a header and format it nicely (differently from the list)--maybe
bold and underlined, excel will guess correctly more ofter that you have
headers.
