Sorting / Numbering problem

G

Gerben Dirksen

I have an Excel worksheet that lists the chapter of a document, i.e.
the first column looks like this:

1
1.1
1.1.1
1.1.2
1.1.3
etc.

now at some point I reach

1.10.1

Now I'd like to sort all my chapters, but 1.10 is sorted before 1.2.

Does anyone have a solution to this?

Thanks for any help,

Gerben

What you really need to do is number them with leading zeros in each
section, like so:

1
1.01
1.01.01
1.01.02
1.01.03

Be careful that they don't get interpreted as dates - pre-format the
cells as Text.

Hope this helps.

If you have already typed the values in, you can change them by using
Find & Replace (CTRL-H). Highlight the cells, CTRL-H, then:

Find What: .1.
Replace with: .01.

Click Replace All. Repeat for other numbers.

Hope this helps.
