Sorting on dates

In 2007, is there a way to sort newest to oldest but put the empty fields on
top instead of at the bottom?

How about changing (edit|replace) the blanks to a date way out in the future,
then do the sort and another edit|replace to change it back to empty cells.

That would be fine, but then I could just do the sort and move the rows from
the bottom to the top.

I was just trying to find out if there was a way to do it without making
changes to the field.

You could use a helper column and a formula, but that's pretty much the same
thing.

I don't have any other work-around.
