sorting problem

I'm trying to build an index; it has to be done by hand and i will use
Word 2008 (mac) unless I find a better way.

Word's sorting feature isn't what I need for this reason:

if I start off here,
phenomena

vivid

perception

see also aisthêsis, empeiria, experience

I need to sort.

But if I sort this, Word realigns it thus:

perception

phenomena

see also aisthêsis, empeiria, experience

vivid

Useless!

So instead, I'm putting imagined breaks in with forward slashes until
I have reached a point where I can do one last sort, at which point
I'll substitute those marks with paragraph + tabs and hopefully end up
with sub-categories.

Perhaps there is a smarter way to do this? There seems no way to
"protect" the subcategories I can see.

Could I do it using field codes in some way?

Any tips appreciated.

What is "useless" about being in alphabetic order as indexes are
supposed to be? What am I missing.

If you are doing it manually, then why sort? Just don't sort if you
want it ordered in some way other than the way Word sorts?
