Sorting resources in Assign Resources window

One PM asked this question.

He has a project plan with many resources. He wants to sort out resources by
name in 'Assign Resources' (Alt+F10) window in Project Professional 2003.

Is there an easy way?

What is happening now in this regard?

On my version of PPro 2K3 SP1, resources sort automatically by name in two
groups. The first group is resources with assignments on the selected task,
the second group is those without assignments.

In the Assign Resources dialog, the resources are listed in the order
displayed on the Resource Sheet view in the project. The display order for
resources in the Resource Sheet view is the reverse order in which the
resources were added to the project team in the Build Team from Enterprise
dialog (last resource selected is the first resource on the Resource Sheet).
To resolve this issue, the project manager should simply apply the Resource
Sheet view and click Project - Sort - By Name. Hope this helps.

That's a gem for my knowledge base. Thanks, Dale! I always sort my Resource
Sheet, but I never made the connection that it was driving the ordering in
the Assign Resources box.

Thanks for the reply. But I've differnet results here.

Dale: In the Assign Resources dialog, the resources are listed in the order
displayed on the Resource Sheet view in the project.

FM: Well I've verified this issue on two different Project 2003 boxes with
different projects. Its not true in my case here. Let me restart so we are on
same page.

Go to Gantt Chart view, then go to Tools > Assign Resources. That would
popup 'Assign Resources' window.

If you select a task from Gannt chart view, the Assign Resources window will
show users assigned to that task on top with a check mark on the left most
column. Rest of the resources will be under those users.

Now back to my question again. If PM have say 10 or 15 resources in his
plan, he wants to assign few of them to a task. In Assign Resources window
all resources are not listed in any order.(sorted by name, or by ID or
matching Build team from Enterprise window or matching resource sheet.) Some
are listed in alphabetical order, not all.

I tested this already. I went to Resource Sheet view sorted out resources by
Name. But that had no effect on 'Assign Resources' window.

In Assign Resources popup window, Im not using any filter.

Statement regarding resources order in Resource Sheet matches order of Build
team from enterprise is true.


Any ideas.
