sorting sub groups in pivot tables

Patty Slowik

In my pivot table I am adding 4 fields to row labels, 1-ID 2-last name
3-first name 4- courses. The pivot table sorts by my first choice (ID, which
I need to be 1st choice because its the unique identifer) So one person
could have 4 courses and this is how it looks, but i also need the data in
courses to be sorted alpha.

Patty,

You should be able to select one of the values in the "course" colum
and choose "Sort A-Z". If you're using Excel 2007 you should use th
commands on the "Pivot Tables" "Options" ribbon.

Let me know if you have problems still.

Good Luck,

Dan

Thanks Dan,

That does work for that example, but now I have another issue. I work in a
school district and I have large lists that I create pivot tables for. I
have to use the unique identifer 'student id" in the 1st column because we
have students that share the same first and last name ex 3 john smith. But
once i have the data in the pivot table, like my example, i want it to alpha
by last name. I do not want to copy and paste values bec I will be adding
columns, like the household column, which has more than 1 response for that
student id, so I need to keep the information as a pivot table. Hope you can
help

id last name first name household
