sorting tasks by end date

G

GActor

Hi,

I want to sort all the tasks in the project by end date (not only within
grouping), by end date. In the past, I exported to Excel and then
re-created the 'hierarchy' (indent) by adding additional columns to represent
the sections, and then sorting the entire sheet by date. This allows me to
see both the task and the section it came from, I find it quite useful in
managing the team ;-). But it takes time and recreating the indents is
quite tedious. Anyone have a better way? I was told I could 'simply' sort
the tasks in Project itself, but so far, haven't been able to figure it out.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Geri,
I'm afraid you can't have both in Project : the "sort by Finish date" and
the WBS hierarchy.
You can first apply a filter which remove the summaries, then sort by Finish
date.

Hi, Mike, Julie and Gerard,

Thanks for your posts ;-).

Mike, when I sort by finish date, it doesn't do the entire sheet, so I
don'[t end up with a list that starts with the earliest end date among all of
the tasks (there are 400 so far). It is sorting within grouping, which isn't
what I need. Perhaps I am doing something wrong? When I asked the
'assistant' it didn't give me any help, and when I last checked the FAQs, I
didn't see an answer.

Julie, thanks for the Excel tip, I am definitely going to check it out.

Gerard, thanks for confirming that I'm not too ignorant!

By-the-way, does anyone know (what version) when the sort feature was
implimented in project?

Hi Geri,

You're welcome and thanks for the feedback.

To your question about sorting within grouping - in the Sort by dialog
box (Project > Sort > Sort by) there is an option to Keep Outline
Structure. If you uncheck that option it should do what I think you
need.

Sorry, I cannot recall how long sorting as been in Project. As long as
I can remember - but I cannot give you specific release information.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along and please post with
any further questions -- that's why we're here. :)

And, of course, you can deselect the showing of Summary tasks in
Tools/Options.../View tab at the bottom.

Sorting was available as far back as Project 4, and hasn't changed in
principle since then.
