sorting zip codes with mixture of 5- and 9-digit codes

I've tried all the zip formats, including separate formatting for the
5-digit and 9-digit codes, but I haven't found anything that lets me
SORT on zip and get the correct mixture of 5- and 9-digit codes. No
matter what I do, I get all the 5-digits first, and then all of the 9-
digits. This does not work for the Post Office.

Thanks (I hope) Joann

how are you formatting the cells in which the zip codes are in you do
know that both in 2004 and 2008 you highlight the entire Column you have
the zip codes in the go to Format > then numbers then special and choose
zip codes. Then go back to the cells that have 9 digits and command
click on each of them go back and choose Zip + 4.

Then you should be able to sort them and they should sort correctly.

If your trying to sort each personal addresses or Business addresses
you sort by Last name for people ( have spread sheet set:

First name
Middle Name or Initial
Last Name
address
address2
City
State
Zip
Phone
work phone
Fax
Cell

or Business
Business Name
address
address2
City
State
Zip
Phone
Fax
Cell
Home Phone.

in case of of Business you sort on Business Name, then City or Zip (if
they have more than one address.

I've tried all the zip formats, including separate formatting for the
5-digit and 9-digit codes, but I haven't found anything that lets me
SORT on zip and get the correct mixture of 5- and 9-digit codes. No

digits. This does not work for the Post Office.

If it's "fixed", don't "break it"!

I never tried doing this before now. Interesting question.
What I found was that if you put a dash after every 5-digit code
e.g. 12345-
and format all zip codes as zip+4, it works.

Formatting ZIP code column as Text sorts correctly for me. Also
allows leading zeros.
