Sound doesn't play when I insert a movie in Powerpoint

When inserting a movie into a Powerpoint 2003 presentation, I get the picture
but no sound when I play the presentation. Have used both Quicktime and
Windows Media Player formats. I installed a plug-in (sounds.exe) from the
Powerpoint website and then got sound, but no picture! The movie was
compressed in Quicktime using Cinepak Sound Compression, and as a different
version using U-Law.

Frankly, I'm flummoxed.
