Sound files in PowerPoint

T

Tim

I am trying to embed a .wav file to a PowerPoint presentation. When I do, it
plays the first time with either preview or slide show, but will not play
after that. The slide timer in the animations pane looks like the file is
playing but there is no audio. If I cut the sound clip and the insert it
again it will play, but only once. The clip is 4 minute song. I have adjusted
the Max Sound File Size to 50,000. The Sound Options box indicates it is
"saved in presentation". What am I doing wrong? How do I get the song to play
each time the slide shoe runs?

What happens if you go to the previous slide and then advance to the slide with
the sound again?

Steve,
If I go to the previous slide and advance to the embedded slide, the text
and picture sequence plays but no audio. If I check it normal view, with the
Custom Animation pane open, the timeline continues as if it is still playing
but no audio.
I have tried editting the file to a 30 second clip, no change. Other clip
art sound files that I inserted in this slide do the same thing. They operate
normally in other slides. I deleted and recreated this slide but to no avail.
Is it the slide layout? I am in comparison layout. I will try making another
slide with different layout.
Any other suggestions?

T

Tim

Echo S,
I tried that but no change. Thanks for the feedback. Any other suggestions?

Tim,

This is really weird.

One thing I'd suggest is to post a summary of what you've tried and your answers
to our questions here in the Public.PowerPoint group. There are a couple folks
there who're pretty sharp about PPT and media. In fact, include "PING AUSTIN"
in the title, see if we can't wake up the grand master. ;-)

Oh, I didn't catch the reference to the clip gallery before.

Try copying the sound file from the clip gallery or whatever folder it's in
directly onto your C drive and then use Insert | Movies and Sound | Sound
from File to insert it. I think the path length may be too long, and that's
causing it not to play. (My Documents and the desktop are both fairly long
paths, but many users don't realize that.) See #2 at

Echo S,
There is just the one sound clip. I have reduced it to a 30 sec. clip
(under
4 MB). I have tried to cut the sound and then trying a different clip art
sound from the gallery. Most did the same thing. I did get one of the clip
art sounds to work properly, but several others I tried would not (such as
cash register sound). I have another slide on the presentation that has 3
different sounds that play at different times in the sequence and they all
work properly. As I stated earlier, I even tried a brand new slide and
then
new slides in all of the layouts with the same result. This is so
frustrating!

How many sounds do you have on this slide? Perhaps that's the problem.

No ... embedded files are part of the document itself. They're not independent
files, so there's no path to consider.

E

Echo S

What Steve said. The path doesn't matter if the file really is embedded. But
only WAVs can be embedded.

You mentioned your file was really large, so it probably is a WAV. In that
case, the path length shouldn't be an issue. But if it's now an MP3, for
example, the path length will matter, because MP3s are not embedded -- they
are always linked.
