On the Mac the procedure is as follows:

1. Place the desired sound on the slide where you want it to begin
playing.

2. Select the sound icon by clicking it.

3. On the PowerPoint menu select "Slide Show" and choose "Custom
Animation".

4. In the Custom Animations window click the "Effect Options" button.

5. In the Effect options window click the "Media Options" tab.

6. Under Media Options click the radio button that says "after (number)
slides" and enter the total number of slides you want the sound to play
across.

A caution, however, is that this feature is supported only in a .ppt
file. If you export to a different format such as .mov this feature is
no longer supported. I do not know if the feature is supported across
multiple platforms.

Hope this helps!

In my experience, the only sound file that cross platforms well is a
..wav file. I do mono channel wav files when I do ppt on my Mac for PC.

Follow Joe's tip for doing it through multiple frames.
