sound will not play when new message received

hi, i am running outlook express 6.00.2800.1123.

in the tools/options/general/notify me if there are any new messages box, i
have it clicked. however, new messages do not play a sound. i cannot figure
out how to troubleshoot this or check and see if the sound file exists or is
corrupted. any help is very much appreciated. thank you.
