Sounds for new email notification

The sound I receive for new email notification is not the .wav file I have
selected via Control Panel -> Sounds -> New mail notification. I've tried
choosing a different .wav file and get the same sound. The sound I get seems
to resemble the error sound that you get when you type in an incorrect
password during login. I can turn the sound off via Outlook properties and
then turn it back on, but I get the same annoying sound. I think this
happened during the last "MS Tuesday patch release" but am not sure. Does
anyone have any ideas or suggestions?
