Sounds

R

Richard

Aloha ... I am developing a 60+ page presentation on an iMac for a client.
Each of the slides contains graphics and either a sound or a music track. In
the two weeks I've been working on it some of the sounds will stop working
and need to be"re-programed". Likewise, some of the iTune tracks, which
at first would play for the entire slide, will revert to only playing for 2±
seconds.

Any suggestions?

Hi Richard,

Sometimes sounds are included with a presentation. Other times they are not.

If they are sound files, the size of the file determines whether or not
the file is included or just linked to using a file path. The size
cut-off is set on the PowerPoint Prefereces > General tab in the section
"Link sounds with file size great than XXX"

Sounds that QuickTime handles will always be linked to. To make links
work right first put the presentation and the linked to file into the
same folder. Then make the link between the presentation and the source
file. You'll have to keep the presentation and the linked to files
together at all times for the links to work.

That option's in the Windows version, where it's rather misleading. It
actually applies only to WAV sound files; all other sounds are linked,
regardless of this setting or the sound file's size.

I wonder if the same is true on Mac? Apparently something along those lines -
I set "Link sounds ..." way high, inserted an MP3 that was decidedly below the
limit but still abuot 2.5mb and saved the file.

Intuition says that even the whole of MS pushing with all its might can't jam a
2.5 mb MP3 into a 32kb PPT file. ;-)

Hi Steve,

I believe that it works the same on both Mac and PC versions with regard
to the Preferences concerning file size. The preference only applies to
WAV files. All other sound file types are handled by QuickTime on the
Mac and Windows Media Player on the PC. The QuickTime and WMP files are
always linked.

Sounds right (though it's the MCI Media Player rather than WMP - lovely point
of confusion, that one - that plays most of the linked media files).

Yeah, I've had a peek or two at it. <g>
