Source Media Required?

B

Bob Felton

Office 2003 Pro, SP2. Updates (17) download but all fail to install.
No error code issued during update process and no request to insert
source media is issued. Only message is : Installation failed (for
all 17 updates). My question is: Is access to source media required
to install updates from Office Update? Thanks.

If you have a MSOCache folder installed on your computer, you should not
need the source media. If you do, you will get a message asking for the
media. The MSOCache folder may not be in the partition in which you
installed Office.

When I had the problem with Office 2003 updates not installing, I was able
to solve it by opening a Office application and running Help, Detect and
Repair. I also needed to run a Detect and Repair on other Office family
applications {such as FrontPage} that were not included in my Office
edition. If Detect and Repair does not work for you, there have been better
solutions posted in this group. Sorry, do not have a record of those.
Since this a US holiday weekend, you may want to do a Detect and Repair
{will not do any damage, but you will need the source media} unless someone
post one of the better solutions.

Thanks for your response on a Holiday weekend, Don. Hope you are
having a good one.

If there is an MSOCache folder on the machine (I will look next time
I'm at the machine), will access to source media be required to
perform a Detect and Repair procedure? The problem is on my #1
son-in-law's machine and he has misplaced his Office 2003 Pro source
media. Thanks.

Bob:
Everytime I did a Detect and Repair on Office 2003 or Office XP, the source
media was always required. So I would plan on needing the media. However,
any copy of Office 2003 Professional will work {if you have or can borrow
one}. You do not need the copy used to install.

OK, I brought my source media with me and attempted a Detect and
Repair (there is no MSOCache folder on the system). When prompted to
insert the source media, I did, but the process reported it still
could not locate the source media. The process is looking for it on a
non-existent drive and doesn't allow me to point to the CD drive where
I inserted it. Any ideas? Thanks.
