SP1 Cannot be applied / Installation failed - My fix

G

I was getting the Cannot be applied (from fullfile) and Failed (web
update) messages. Was also unable to do a repair install from the
original CD.
The fix was to restore a registry 'clean' file of 'useless' entries
removed by RegSupreme.
The clue was - from an Office app (I used word) go help - about -
system info. Expand the Office 2003 Apps and look at the Summary info,
if the product ID field is blank / unavailable there are missing reg
entries (don't know which ones though). Also don't know a fix if you
have not got a reg backup with the entries present as a re-install
from CD seems to fail according to others reports.

Graham, we've seen a few SP1 failures caused by missing registry key ...
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Delivery\SourceEngine\Downloads\<Product
GUID>\Sources\<Product GUID>
Path = <original install path>

It's actually valid if there is no value for the 'Path'. Can you tell if
this one of the registry keys that was removed by your utility?

Can you also tell me what version of RegSupreme that you're using?

RegSupreme is V1.1

Following the restoration of the deleted entries I deleted the restore
file so no longer know what was in it.

The only other clue I can offer is that one of the steps I took to try
to correct the problem was to try to use the LISTool but this utility
was unable to run with the entries missing.

The key you have quoted is present on my system now and is NOT blank.

I had same problem & had suspected RegSupreme too
I got it to work by uninstalling Office Web Components
I will see if RegSupreme has entries I need
Only SOME of my Product IDs are "not available"

Thanks much. We'll see if we can duplicate the problem.

Yes, the LISTool will fail for the same reason as the patch. They both use
custom actions that will fail when they don't find the expected information
in the registry (in this case, entire registry keys are missing - an empty
key is ok but not a missing key). We're going to investigate making the
next service pack more resilient in this case.
