SP1 for Office 2003 failed with Expected version not found

I can't update Office 2003 with either downloads of SP1. It fails with the
error message "expected version of product not found".

I have tried the "Reinstall or Repair" button from the CD. That seems to
work fine but the SP1 still gives me the "expected version not found"
message.

I am reluctant to remove and reinstall the product from the CD as I recently
spend 2 hours getting a new Key from Microsoft "Help" when reinstalling the
product from the CD after I changed the motherboard in my computer. (1
product on 1 computer...new motherboard.)

Anyone have a solution? I am running Windows XP,version 5.1, build 2600, SP2.
