SP1 /SP2a compatability

Do Project Pro SP1 users have to upgrade to SP2 immediately after the
server goes to SP2a before they can connect to the server?

I also wonder about the reverse (would PPro SP2 users be able to connect to
a SP1
server) - we have some users which may need to connect to both SP1 and SP2a
servers for a little while.

It looks like PWA is a little different. As the SP2a server forces download
of the most current components, SP2 must be used for PWA users. I've tried
using the PQA SP2 components with a SP1 server and haven't seen problems, but
the tests were not robust. Is this OK as well?

Thanks

Steve,

The short answer is yes they need to match. I would upgrade both
environments or neither at the same time.

Here is a compatibility table:

MSProjectServer "noSP" = MSProject "noSP" or "SP1" or "SP2"
MSProjectServer "SP1" = MSProject "SP1" or "SP2"
MSProjectServer "SP2" = STOP!!! upgrade immediately to SP2a!!!
MSProjectServer "SP2a" = MSProject "SP2"

No exceptions to the above or you'll corrupt your projects!!!

I don't think that is correct.

If SP2a is installed on the server, the clients can be on SP1 or SP2. The
only exception is if the client is installed on the Project Server box, in
which case the Service Packs must match.

Hmmm. Okay, I'll go with that.

Technically you are right; however, when exceptions to the rule are
introduced, e.g. SP1 will work except when on the Project Server server
itself it has to be SP2 will be overwhelmingly complicated and not intuitive.

If I go with SP1=SP1or higher and SP2a=SP2 or higher, it follows the nomarl
upgrade psyche of all users who are used to this pattern so it would be less
confusing i think. That is, keep is a simple and straightfoward as possible.

For future reference, I will mention it to be fully technically correct.

Thanks!

One practical reason why this is important to know is that it relieves the
organization from logistical worries such as getting all clients upgraded
simultaneously with Project Server.
