SP2 didn't fix proxy TUNNEL issue...

(I know this has been hashed about before, but I'm wondering if anyone
has found the solution)

At work, we have a proxy server. Entourage X worked perfectly fine
when I manually set the proxies from within Entourage to use the TUNNEL
process. Entourage 2004 now uses the System Preferences, which do not
include a TUNNEL option.

I have set up two computers side-by-side at work, one running X and
one running 2004. The X machine works fine, and the 2004 machine hangs
when trying to send/receive POP mail (but Hotmail does work, probably
because it goes through the HTML proxy using HTML).

I've determined that Entourage 2004 uses the SOCKS proxy when trying
to connect, but this doesn't work. When I delete the SOCKS proxy (from
the system Network Prefs), I get an error when checking mail, but when
I input my work proxy, it just hangs.

Does anyone have a fix for this? I've attempted to bypass various
domains, but I haven't stumbled upon the right one (if that is the
answer). I'd just like my TUNNEL back...

Thanks!

Could you qualify the hang:
* Does the app freeze, and you just get the beach ball cursor?
* Do the progress bars still move, but you still get the beach ball cursor?
* Do the progress bars move and you can do other things in the application,
but the progress for your POP account never gets anywhere? In this case,
does it ever time out, or is it really stuck forever?

What kind of software is the SOCKS proxy? Is it using v4 or v5 of the SOCKS
protocol?

I hope we can help you figure it out, or failing that, help us figure out if
there's something wrong in our networking code.

Thanks,

Hi Nathan,

Thanks for the reply! I'm not at work now, but the "freeze" does not
produce the beachball, and I can quit the retrieve mail function
without an error. If I leave it long enough, it does time out,
producing an error. I've tried to use Eavesdrop (a tcpdump front-end)
to determine what Entourage 2004 is sending to the server, but it only
seems to send four characters and doesn't get a response.

I don't know what the software is for the SOCKS proxy...what I meant
was that the SOCKS proxy in the System Preferences-->Network
Preferences menu is the box that needs to be checked in order for the
"send/receive mail" function to wait for a timeout instead of producing
an outright error (i.e., if the SOCKS proxy isn't filled in, Entourage
tries to go straight to the POP server and gets an error, instead of
going through the proxy). I can give more information tomorrow, if
necessary. Cheers!

-Chris
p.s. I will ask the networking folks at work which proxy software we
use.
