SP2 installation woes

I am somewhat new to the world of computing, and when I bought a mac
one of the first things I did was purchase office 2004 and install it
on my computer.

I have never updated it however, and I recently had a problem whenever
I started one of the office applications saying I was missing the
framework library. On the site, it said that the solution to this
would be to update to SP2. I tried to update to it and it said it
couldn't locate the correct version of the program. I ran the updater
and got all the way up to 11.3.7 and I didn't see any other updates
between that and 11.2 or whatever. When I tried again to install it,
it still says it can't find the correct version! What am I doing
wrong? I looked on the site and couldn't find anything specific to
this problem.

Any help would be much appreciated, thank you.

Welcome to the Mac community. We'll do our best to help you with your Office
problems. I do suggest that you also join a general Mac talk list. I can
recommend two that are excellent.

You¹ll find links for the Mac-L and OSX list on Suggested Links:

MacOSXHints forums are also excellent for getting help:

If you receive a framework error, re-apply recent updates. A framework error
normally means one or more components of Office have not been updated
correctly and are now out of synch with other bits.

From the Error Page: <http://www.entourage.mvps.org/error/page.html>

However, since you have tried this.....

You might need to download the combo updater from Apple and run it again
rather than using Software Update. Doing so overwrites potentially
problem-causing files. Several users have reported this fixed some odd
problems they were having with Office. Combo updaters will install on the
same version as they¹re applying‹no need to roll back or do a clean install.

Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update (PPC)

Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update (Intel)

Run Software Update in System Preferences after updating to be sure there
are no more updates needed.

In addition, to running the Apple combo updater, I would use "Remove Office"
located in the Additional Tools folder in Office 2004. After you run the
combo, restart your computer, run Repair Permissions (directions below) then
install Office from the CD and update.

You'll need these updaters:

11.3.5 This is a combo updater
11.3.6 This requires 11.3.5 to be installed
11.3.7 This requires 11.3.6 to be installed.

Not all Office applications are updated to the install version. See this
article that explains what happens and how to know you are really updated.

Using Repair Permissions after installing MS Office or any application that
uses an installer is often advised. To use Repair Permissions:

1. Open Disk Utility in your Applications/Utility folder.
2. Click on the First Aid tab and select Repair Permissions
3. Click on the icon for your boot volume.
4. Click the repair permissions button.

Don't run from CD. Updates contain a newer versions of the application's
permissions.

Not sure what "the site" you're referring to (and there are slightly too
many "it"s for me to be sure what's going on), but for any version of
Office2004, you need only apply the 11.3.5, 11.3.6 and 11.3.7 updaters.
The 11.3.5 updater contains all the previous updates.

The framework error usually means that an update was not completely
applied for some reason. Make sure all Office apps are closed, then
reapply the three updaters in sequence.

Make sure all Office apps are closed, then
reapply the three updaters in sequence.

All Office applications include Microsoft Messenger for Mac and Office
Notifications.

Options to quit:

1. In Entourage Menu select "Turn off Office Notifications"

2. Double-click the Office Notifications program, located in the Microsoft
Office 2004/Office folder. On the Office Notifications menu, click Turn Off
Office Notifications.

3. Fire up Activity Monitor, look for 'database daemon' and choose 'quit
process' from the processes menu (just do a normal quit, not a forced quit).

4. Easiest way.....use this script:

tell application "Microsoft Database daemon" to quit

(or download script here)
