SP3 Update Dramas

System: XP Pro.
After loading Office SP3 (said was successful), and was
asked to restart computer. However on restarting all the
links to shortcuts arent working (now .LNK files), all
links to programs are not working, including windows, even
in Control panel only a few are active.
I can open via documents, not program files ie word,excel
Any advice would be appreciated.
