I found the cause of some of my misalignment problems with two column
layout in Word 2004. It is bizarre!
I had a chapter heading single column, section break (continuous) then
the two column text.
The column alignment depends on the amount of space after in the style
of the last paragraph in the *previous* section.
That has to be a bug. Surely?
Also, it appears that suppress space at top and bottom of page
preference does not apply to continuous section breaks.
Why else would I use a continuous section break except for a double
column section mid page? Why do I have to line the columns up by
manually wrecking my style definitions?
What it boils down to is that 'space before' is unusable on
multi-column or page-spread work.
Who cares if the typography is broken when we have a command for
DrawInsertExplosion2?
