Space bar deletes text!!

Help!!! I am typing along just fine in a word document and apparently I hit
some key that makes the space bar eat text ahead of it when I try to make
corrections. I don't know how to turn this off!!!

Press the Insert key once to toggle out of Overtype mode. Alternatively,
double-click OVR on the status bar (which will be black) or clear the check
box for "Overtype mode" on the Edit tab of Tools | Options.
