space bar problem

My friend has a weird problem. He is using MS Word 2007 and whenever
he hits the space bar a period is typed on his document. Any idea how
that happened and what to do to fix it?

Thanks,
Pat

Are you sure it's actually a period? If nonprinting characters are turned on, Word shows each space as a smaller dot centered vertically in the line of text -- but it also shows paragraph marks (¶),
arrows for tabs, and so forth. See http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/NonPrintChars.htm for explanations of the marks.

You can turn them off by pressing Ctrl+Shift+8 or clicking the ¶ button.

In case it is not the Non Printing Characters HIDE/SHOW setting then
consider that some keyboards are programmable. SO, if actually
printing a period after using the spacebar check to see whether the
keyboard is remapped. Check the manual for the keyboard if it is
programmable to change back to the default setting or to remap keys.

Do a quick print preview or print to hardcopy to check for periods
when entering spaces.
ReBoot PC can sometimes fix simple issues.
