space bar

I know this is a basir question but I can't seem to find
the solution! How come that when I use the space bar,
instead of adding a space it erases the text beyond?

Also--Go to the menu bar and go Tools Options Edit and make sure the
Overtype Mode box (that's in Word 2000; your version may differ) is
UNchecked.

Clicking the OVR button or pressing Insert will change the setting in Tools

Options > Edit.
