Hi I'm new to Mac and having a problem with large spaces between words
when there is only one hit of the space bar there.

Any help. I've change view/layout and still it shows.

What version of Word and Mac OS are you using?

What Zoom do you have your documents set to? (View | Zoom, see what it
tells you, check in both Normal and Page Layout View)

Hit ¶ on the standard toolbar to turn on nonprinting characters and make
sure there is really only one space (each space denoted by small grey dot).

In addition to what Daiya posted, are you using a justified alignment?
If so, large gaps can appear unless you have automatic hyphenation on
and the hyphenation zone set to a fairly small value.

If you are sensitive to interword spacing, Word is rather irritating. I
call it RNT (ransom note typography) Check fractional widths in print
preferences, avoid short justified lines and enable hyphenation.
Don't look at the comments fields in split window mode - spacing there
is atrocious. Daiya's trick is the only way out in there, count the
little gray dots or count the left right cursor keystrokes.

It is also possible you have a dodgy font. See if the problem stays
when you change fonts.

Also, if you have a very very old version of Mac OS X, like 10.1.mumble
and an unupdated copy of Word v.X, there is a dreadful bug if you have
Word's general preferences 'enable quartz text smoothing' set and you
are using a Postscript font. That was worse than unusable at certain
font sizes and magnifications, the widths were so far out that
sometimes your type would appear right to left. Upgrade Word and OS X
if you are in that situation.

If none of these help, post back with Word and OS X version numbers and
which fonts are giving you the most trouble.
